What is People of Note?
People of Note is a community Bristol choir that has been running since 2000, it currently numbers about 160 members and we have space for more. We meet in Southville on Tuesday evenings or in Clifton on Wednesdays – see our How to Join page for full details of where, when and how.
See the Term Dates page for next dates.
About the Choir
This Bristol choir is led by Nickomo Clarke and his wife Rasullah. Take a look at their website www.nickomoandrasullah.com for more info. Nickomo is famous for his skills as a composer and an arranger of material for community choirs and also for his “Harmonic Temple” songs which are sung all over the world. Most of the songs the choir sings are his arrangements or original pieces. Rasullah offers a light caring touch, a clear voice and a patient teaching style.
In choosing songs for the choir to perform, Nickomo and Rasullah aim for variety of content and genre –see the Repertoire page for a better idea. They make sure basses, tenors, altos and sopranos all get turns at singing the lead part. They also aim to choose songs that will uplift, heal, inspire, satisfy and, to a degree, challenge the choir. Life can be tough, and they believe singing is a good way of reconnecting with a sense of joy and empowerment.
About the People of Note Community choir
During the 14 years that the People of Note choir have been singing together, the many friendships that have emerged, have bonded into an extensive supportive community. In 2004 the members created their own organisation within the choir called ‘PONITA’, see www.ponita.org.uk
As well as running social events, PONITA provides a full calendar of performance gigs around Bristol and sometimes further afield, in which all choir members are welcome to participate. PONITA is unique amongst Bristol choirs.
Nickomo and Rasullah encourage the activities of PONITA as they live in Somerset and are not available to participate fully in all Bristol choir events. Nickomo assists in the development of the conducting skills of those members who are willing to step up and lead a song or two in his absence.
What is special about People of Note?
The inspirational genius of Nickomo’s musical gift, plus, the additional framework of community that PONITA offers, are the two greatest strengths of this Bristol choir. See the sections below for more detail.
